Project Information
The curriculum is designed to reinforce academic skills and concepts presented in the
classroom. A2T offers opportunities for math, physical and environmental science, social
studies, and problem solving skills to be taught through "hands-on" activities while refurbishing,
troubleshooting, and maintaining donated computer equipment. The project embodies a philosophy
which promotes the belief that education should empower individuals and include opportunities for
community service projects which are integrated into the classroom curriculum.
Participants receive training and instruction in computer operations, hardware diagnostics,
repair and upgrades that include:
|
- Classes & Workshops
- Seminars
- Summer Camps
- After-School Activities
- Special Events
|
A program of cooperative learning, the project is designed to provide classroom
lessons and afterschool activities which empower students, teachers and the community. The focus of
each project is working together to the usage and understanding of computer hardware and technology
for learning. This project allows individuals to overcome fear and "techno-phobia" through access to structured
learning activities.
Participants master skills in identifying, cleaning, testing and
upgrading computer components such as RAM, floppy and hard disk drives and batteries. There are
also opportunities to work with various computer peripherals such as printers, scanners, modems,
digital cameras, and external drives as they are sometimes donated to this program. In addition,
diagnostic software utility programs which reformat and optimize hard drives and install an
operating system are also used. The students are then introduced to educational programs which are
available either commercially or via the internet as shareware and freeware .
Through hands-on Service Learning in the classroom to projects within the community, students learn practical,
real-world applications for the educational material presented.
